Modern Foreign Languages
Mrs Sophie Curtis- EAL/ MFL Teacher
MFL Teaching and Learning at St John’s
French is taught from Year 3 at St John’s by Mrs Curtis (MFL Lead), and Year 6 also learn Spanish in their last term. The children learn through different topics, and develop their skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. They learn through songs, games, role play, videos, as well as learning some basic French grammar. We have several French speakers in school, who are encouraged to help other children in class, equally any Spanish speakers in Year 6. Our Year 6 children also have penpals in our link school in France who they write to each term, so they user their French for real!
Language of the Half-term
As well as French in KS2, we also have a focus language each half term, to celebrate some of our many languages spoken at St John’s, e.g. Italian, Malayalam (from India), Spanish, Polish, Tagalog (from the Philippines), Russian, Albanian, Hungarian and Portuguese. It gives the EAL children a chance to shine; they help in their classes with the pronunciation. We involve EAL children and parents as much as possible. For example, we have had Indian dancing, Polish traditional costume, writing in Malayalam, and children have made their own presentations to show their class!
